Hi Michael, Are you interested in Pickleball Video analysis?
Michael Owens III

Yes, I am curious to what you provide with the video analysis and pricing points, because I am assuming it isn't free.
Jack

At the moment, it is free to the first 20 players

Well, that is nice to know. What type of advise would one expect? To kind of shed some, I've been told I am around a 4.0, and I primarily play doubles, but I have started playing singles, but really lack players to play against for singles.
Jack

Upload a video of you playing a game on YouTube. If you would like to be involved in the live stream session, then we would set and time/day and go through they game. Depending on the game, it would take about 30-45 minutes.

Is there a preferred angle for the recorded video?
Jack

Camera Posistion: It depends on how wide the lens is on your camera or cell phone. If you don't have a wide angle lens, then probably off to one side and back for enough to get all four corners of the court.

We use a gopro4 silver edition at the moment.

Jack

That will work. Does it have a 170 degree lens?

I am pretty sure it is the standard lens. I have a game uploaded, by my friend who has the gopro, on YouTube already. It is a singles game between us.
Jack

From Amazon: GoPro4 Silver Edition Protune™ with SuperView™ delivers cinema-quality capture and advanced manual control for photos and video with the world’s most immersive wide-angle field of view

Send me the link to your singles game

Let me take a look
Jack

OK. Got it. You uploaded it yesterday
Michael Owens III

Yes
Jack

It was a good come from behind game.

Yes, I really enjoyed that match, even though I lost after being up so far.
Jack

You have the basic strokes down. Good serve with pace. You cover the court well. Good shot selection.

Do you know about the YouTube editing keys?

I do not. It was Steve who actually uploaded the video.

He uses vegas pro to render and edit and then uploads them to youtube.
Jack

You can slow down the action and jump 5-10 seconds forward/backward

Ah, I knew about some of those, not all of them
Jack

Using the YouTube editing keys, go through the game and create a time code list in a comment. I would be interested in what you see in the video.

When I watch myself on video, tend to focus on unforced errors and low percentage shots.

How long have you been playing PB? Did you play tennis? If so, how long?

I started playing pickleball about 6 years ago, but nothing serious till about 3 maybe 4 years ago, I think. I have been playing tennis for like 13 years.
Jack

You have a great 2-handed backhand. Did you extend the handle?

No, the handle of the paddle hasn't been modified. I actually just started incorporating a two handed backhand because I was having trouble driving a 1 handed back hand, and the fact i used a 2 handed backhand in tennis
Jack

You appear to have good control off both wings

Thank you, I still feel that I am not where I want to be, and I am unsure of what I am doing wrong to help improve myself. The fact that I am from a smaller area makes it tough.
Jack

Well, it is past my bed time. We can chat tomorrow.

BTW: Are you looking for a camera to record you PB games?

Okay, sounds good. I will go through the video tomorrow evening. And I would be interested in looking at one.
Jack

I don't understand: And I would be interested in looking at one.
Michael Owens III

I am interested in looking into cameras to record with
Jack

I bought the Lightdow on Amazon 3 weeks ago for $20.
Michael Owens III

That's a decent price
Michael Owens III

I will look into this brand. The price seems really good.
Jack

The Samsung EVO 32gb MicroSD card was $12.99 from Amazon. I tried a 64gb Class 10 no-name brand. It did not work.
Michael Owens III

Yeah, that can happen sometimes. I worked at a TV station, and we had to watch what sd cards we ordered
Jack

I can get the camera 12 feet in the air on the fence behind the PB court in less than a min.
Michael Owens III

Sounds good. Thank you again. I will go through the video tomorrow evening and we can talk more tomorrow as available.

Jack, I have gone through the game I shared with you last night and wrote down my notes to what I saw and questions I had.
Jack

Are your notes in a time code list?

Yes, I have them all on notepad at the moment.

example of one of them, 5:05 - return of serve needs to get deeper
Jack

Great! Can you post the notes as a comment on the YouTube video?

The time code numbers will be hot links to what you are talking about on the video

okay, it is there.
Jack

OK. It looks great....
Michael Owens III

Good.
Jack

I just picked one at random to watch: 4:17 - missed backhand, should I have taken that in the air and not let it bounce? Should have used my 1 handed backhand slice

I had to go back 5 seconds (left arrow key) to watch the point.
Michael Owens III

Ohh, the time codes may point to the part of the point I was questioning, and not the actual start of the point.
Jack

In the moment of play, you didn't know if the ball was going to bounce in or out. So, you let it bounce....

"Should have used my 1 handed backhand slice" It appears that you were rushed for time. The ball was behind you. Is that right?
Michael Owens III

yes, I was not able to get to the ball pretty well

But after watching it, I felt that the shot choice, a 2handed backhand, was not the smartest choice, and I would have had a (even if only slightly) higher chance to get the ball back into play by doing a 1 handed slice.
Jack

Singles is a fast, power game. Steve made a great shot. But, he stayed at the base line. He probably thought the ball was going out....why run if you don't have to.
Jack

You didn't get under the ball. That is why it went into the net. In the moment, you probably thought you didn't have time to get under the ball - so you took a wack at it
Michael Owens III

Hmm, that is very possible.
Jack

It was a surprisingly great shot considering Steve was down 0-9
Michael Owens III

I can agree to that.
Jack

I think you had a little more time than you thought you had. The top players know how to give themselves a little more time. They don't panic. They rarely jerk their stroke. The key is to keep a smooth, consistent stroke, under pressure

Okay
Jack

4:35 - missed wide right on simple forehand shot. Did not set my body correctly? (Your weight is on your back foot. You didn't move your feet and get set for the ball. What were you trying to do with the ball?

I'm pretty sure I was trying to drop it into the back kitchen line on his backhand side
Jack

That is why your weight was on your back foot
Jack

5:05 - return of serve needs to get deeper - Your return was right to him. I hardly had to move...and you ball was short. He has a good back hand. He is older than you. You could have made him run for the ball down the line....your forehand

5:30 - remember to get the ball at the right distance away from you, and not that close - You didn't move your feet.

What PB players do you watch on YouTube?

I actually don't watch any
Jack

Really? One second....

Check out a couple of Tim "Puppet Master" Nelson games and tell me what you think

Okay, I will do that.

Ohh, Valentisports... they are up in rochester
Jack

Wesley Gabrielsen is ambidextrous

Back in the day, Tim Nelson was sponsored by Valentisports

Interesting. I have heard about Tim from Steve.
Jack

Jennifer Lucore also moves her feet and gets set early.

Tim and I analyzed one of his games. It is on the playlist I sent you last night

Did you use the YouTube editing keys when making your time code list?

yes
Jack

It is a great app. Only on YouTube, too.

Thank you again for this Jack. I appreciate it. Is there any other things you'd like to mention? And are you sure you don't want anything for this?
Jack

- And are you sure you don't want anything for this? Yeah. I want you to improve and reduce your unforced errors. If any of this helps, write a little review. If it doesn't help, forget about it

Thank you very much Jack. I will let you know how things go. The biggest thing I took out of this is remembering to move the feet appropriately and get set to hit the ball before doing so.
Jack

Well, that is what I'm working on, too.

It can be tough for me when the ball is within my hitting range. I get lazy and instead of taking the small half steps to adjust to the ball, I just force my body to adjust.
Jack

I tend to move my feet and get into position at the beginning of the day...at the end....not so much. Record your games, post them on YouTube (private or public) and take the time to analyze them ASAP. You will be your best/worst critic

Jack

Hi Michael, I just added you to the Secret Facebook Group - Pickleball Game Analysis so that you can share your experiences with others interested in analyzing their games.

There are only 12 members but the group will grow.
Can I take our session and post it on the Student Of The Game Blog so that I can share it with others?https://pickleballgame.blogspot.com/
